The Schwegler Elementary School PTA, Cans for the Community, Friends of the Kaw, Friends of Hidden Valley, and Marie Stockett won the 2008 Imagination & Place Environmental Award for Volunteers. Kansas Biological Survey Associate Scientist and plant ecologist Kelly Kindscher won the 2006 Imagination & Place Environmental Award for an Educator. The Imagination & Place Environmental Award, established in partnership with the City of Lawrence Waste Reduction & Recycling Division, is designed to recognize Douglas County community members who have made a demonstrable and positive impact on the local, regional, and/or global environment. On a yearly basis (in a multi-year cycle), one of the following categories will be recognized: businesses, educators, artists, volunteers, public servants, and others. The award will be presented each year on or near Earth Day, April 22. The Imagination & Place Environmental Award will be created by an artist living in Douglas County who is personally committed to the preservation of the natural environment. The inspiration for the award comes from the idea of giving something beautiful for something beautifully done.
